My Educational Philosophy

Purpose of School: The purpose of school is to provide a place for children to grow and develop the person they are to become.

Purpose of Teacher: I believe a teacher should be a role model, educator and friend. A teacher's job is to teach the curriculum, but the presentation of that curriculum makes the difference.

Classroom Management: The classroom is the child's home away from home. The classmates are their family members and they work and learn together and grow as a group, but most importantly as individuals. I believe in creating a classroom of mutual respect and appreciation for one another. With their classmates, students will contribute a part of themselves to the group and have memorable experiences while enjoying learning.

Education: Education is a never-ending experience that can always be improved upon. It teaches about life in the present, past and how to make a better future. Learning can take one places they have never been before and give them a knowledge that no one can take away. Education is a building block for the future and is a major factor of success.

Team Effort: I believe the education of a child is a group effort. Education begins in the home with family, and later extends to the school community and the outside world. Each factor needs to work together to reach the greatest level of success. More specifically, in school, the students, parents, and teacher need to be on the same team and work together to obtain the greatest results for the child's development.

The Purpose of School

There are many purposes of school. In general, the purpose of school is to provide a place for the students to develop and grow. A school is like a scaled down version of the real world. In both places, a person is expected to have a job, complete work, learn new things, have fun and interact with others.

School is a place where children are taught the skills that they will use for the rest of their lives, such as reading, writing and mathematics. It's a place where children can make new friends, play with old ones, have disagreements and become friends again. School is a place where they can learn from mistakes and have someone gently guide them to the correct answer. It's a place where they can use glitter, clay, and watercolors to make beautiful pieces of art work. School is a place where children can be appreciated for who they are.
For some students, school is a safe haven to escape a life at home that is less desirable. School is a reliable place where they have a routine of start time, recess, lunch and dismissal. School is also a place where they learn about rules and expectations for work. It is a place where they can interact with their peers in and outside of the classroom. It is also a place where they can discover a world that is not known to them.

School is a place where children grow and develop to become the people the will be in the future.

Learning as a Process

Learning is definitely a process that can always be continued. Learning begins as an infant with learning how to communicate and fill basic needs. Even as a child in elementary school, the learning continues to develop with each year building upon earlier years. New information is added gradually, which expands the students' knowledge and curiosity. As the child develops, their feelings towards learning also develops. As I reflect on my own educational background and remember the experiences and teachers who have shaped the person I am today. As a teacher, I feel privileged to be a part of my students' learning process and their development.
